As the gateway to the southern shore of Great Slave Lake, Hay River is considered the capital of whitefish, a fish of the salmon family that is found here in great numbers. Fishing trips are a must, as is swimming on the sandy shores of the lake. Cultural attractions include the Hay River Reserve and its two churches, the Yamozha Kue Society and its tours of northern Aboriginal cultures, and the Hay River Heritage Center, located in the historic Hudson's Bay Company building. Also stop by the Dene Craft Shop, a local First Nation, located in Enterprise.
