Travel Guide Loufoulakari

Heading south from Linzolo, we reach Mbanza Ndounga and then Kimpanzou. A bad track makes a 4x4 necessary to reach the Loufoulakari waterfalls. They are a gigantic staircase of sandstone slabs at the estuary of the Loufoulakari and the Congo River, which is very steep here. A place of history, the great Kongo resistance fighter Boueta Mbongo was beheaded here and thrown into the water by the colonizers. Later, Abbé Fulbert Youlou, considered by his followers to be the reincarnation of "Jesus-Matsoua", took to bathing here in his cassock to soak up the ancestral powers: his clothes, though immersed, would remain dry.
