Kwilu is located 400 km from Bandundu and 525 km from Kinshasa. It can be reached by plane from Kinshasa or by road from Kinshasa, and it is also possible to reach Kikwit by the Kwilu River. Kikwit has four communes: Kazamba, Lukemi, Lukolela and Nzida. In pre-colonial times, the city was a port for rubber, ivory and palm oil. In 1920, this city was named Makaku or Makal and was renamed Poto-Poto in 1937. The city was an obligatory relay for the distribution of mail and fuel and in 1940 it became a banking center with the opening of a branch of the Bank of the Belgian Congo.
