Located 470 kilometers from Kinshasa, Boma, which means fort in Kikongo, has a population of 500,000. It is the second largest city in central Kong. The equatorial forest of Mayumbe offers a magnificent view of its lush flora. The road crosses some forest galleries and sometimes disappears under the canopies. At the entrance to Boma, the river flows over less rugged terrain. A little upstream from the city, the river divides into two huge arms that form a series of islands, some located in Angola, others in the DRC. Boma is the city where the first president of the DRC, Joseph Kasa Vubu, retired after his power was overthrown by Mobutu in 1965.
