Massangano, province of Kwanza Norte, is located on the right bank of Rio Kwanza at the confluence with Rio Lucala, on the fahne Luanda-Dondo, about 35 kilometres from Dondo (150 minutes track) and from Luanda.Fortress Forte of Nossa Senhora da Vitória de Massangano was built in 1583 by Manuel Cerveira Pereira (according to the UNESCO/WHS source) to consolidate the Portuguese occupation in the region three years after the battle of Massangano won by the Portuguese forces on those of King Kiluange of Ngola. After defeating the forces of King Kiluange of Ngola in 1580, the Portuguese forces had been pushed back by them in 1582. This fortress then served as a base for shipments to the interior of the land and the slave harvest. The town had previously been founded by Paulo Dias of Novais. The armed forces of Queen Njinga attacked Forteresse Fortress in 1640. His two sisters Cambu and Mayotte were made captive and the second was executed.During the years of occupation of Luanda by the Dutch Company of the West Indies, from 1641 to 1648, the Portuguese forces departed in Massangano to resist the re-conquest of the coastal capital by Salvador Correia de Sá e Benevides in August 1648.Forteresse Fortress was classified as a National monument by decree in April 1923. Today, this state property is managed by the Ministry of Culture. The church has been completely restored.
