This village of 53 basalt houses is an ancient ceremonial center for the birdman cult.
On the south side of the volcano, before the cliff, stands the village of Orongo, which means El Llamado in Rapanui. It is an ancient ceremonial center where the cult of the birdman was practiced. It is composed of about 53 basalt houses whose elliptical architecture is unique on the island: 51 were restored between 1974 and 1976, the other 2 are intact. On their walls, there are some carved stones and rock paintings, but a large part of these frescoes have been plundered by Western expeditions.
