Originally, Chañaral was a sparsely inhabited cove through which the production of the Finca de Chañaral, a small inland oasis, passed. The discovery of the Las Animas copper mine in 1824 was the beginning of its development. It is here that the first export of copper from Chile took place. Little frequented by tourists, this large town of nearly 15,000 inhabitants is a good starting point for visiting the national park, Pan de Azúcar, located about 18 km away. The inhabitants, helpful and warm, will welcome you with pleasure, and the few addresses for lodging and sleeping will be enough to satisfy your stay.
