Kütralkura was officially recognized in 2019 as the first UNESCO Geopark in Chile. A living territory with the goal of conserving natural and cultural heritage, this geopark is located on the volcanic area of the Southern Andes. Kütralkura comes from the Mapudungun language and means "stone(kura) of fire(kütral)". This name refers to the intense volcanism present in this territory. In total, there are six protected areas, five volcanoes with different types of landscapes and a geological history covering the last 250 million years.
