Also called Ernakulathappan Temple, this temple dedicated to Shiva is one of the most important in the city. It is mentioned in the Sangam and was one of the major temples for the Chera dynasty. It was built according to the rules of traditional Kerala architecture. The temple festival, Utsavom, is one of the most important in the city. Foreign travelers can visit the temple but cannot enter the shrine where the shivalinga with the deity, Ernakulathappan, who watches over the city is located. Close to the pier, it can be visited quickly.
