Built in the 18th century, during the reign of the Travancore monarch, Marthanda Varma, the palace is a two-storey building with typical features of Kerala architecture, including gabled roofs, dormer windows and narrow corridors. This palace houses the largest mural painting in Kerala, called the Gajendra Moksham. It measures 4.25 m by 3.34 m and depicts Vishnu blessing the king of elephants and a crocodile. The museum exhibits sculptures, paintings, bronzes and an interesting collection of coins.
