Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam, its full name, stands proudly on Indrakiladri Hill. Kanaka Durga, goddess of power, wealth and benevolence, is the presiding deity of Vijayawada. Considered as Swayambhu or "self-manifested", she is considered omnipotent. In this temple, the most important in the city, Kanaka Durga is worshipped in the form of Lakshmi Durga. It is said that Adi Sankara visited this temple and installed the Sri Chakra here. There are free shuttle buses to the temple every day.
