JAYACHAMARAJENDRA ART GALLERY
Art gallery featuring an ancient private collection from the Woodeyar dynasty, furniture and objects from the royal family, etc.
Jaganmohan Palace, built in 1861 during the reign of Krishnaraja Woodeyar III, was once the residence of the Woodeyars. It is one of the city's seven palaces. It was converted into an art gallery in 1915. It houses the former private collection of the Woodeyar dynasty, who ruled Mysore from 1399. The first floor features furniture and objects that once belonged to the royal family, as well as large portraits of the maharajas.
The second floor features an important collection of paintings, including many by Rembrandt. There are also paintings by Pierre-Paul Rubens and Titian. The gallery features paintings enhanced with gold leaf from the Mysore, Bengal and European schools. A wing is also dedicated to Indian artists.
On the second floor, statuettes and other objects that once belonged to the maharajas are on display. On the third floor, the walls are decorated with frescoes, some of which are of great interest. They date from the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III (1794-1868). They include one of the earliest pictorial representations of the Dussehra festival processions in Mysore. The sovereign parades in a chariot pulled by elephants. The adjacent wall features board games, some of which were invented by the maharaja himself. The players are positioned so that their thoughts rise directly to heaven. The auditorium hosts traditional dance and music performances.
