This ancient city, sometimes also called Saket, is said to have been the sacred capital of the kingdom of Rama, the seventh incarnation of the god Vishnu. A holy city in Hinduism, it is also an important place of pilgrimage for the Jains. Although its name means "cannot be destroyed by war", Ayodhya was the scene of bloody clashes in December 1992, when Hindu fanatics destroyed the Babri mosque and built the Rama temple in its place.
