NAMGYAL INSTITUTE OF TIBETOLOGY

The Institute of Tibetology, established in 1958, is located 1 km south of Gangtok. The museum part contains magnificent thangkas, numerous relics, sacred objects, such as bowls carved in human skulls or wind instruments carved in bones. Recognized worldwide for its research on Buddhism (language, traditions, medicine, science, etc.), its library, on the second floor, houses very rare manuscripts in Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese and Lepcha.
