Delhi's oldest church, built in 1836, and one of three dedicated to Anglican worship in the capital.
St. James Church is the oldest church in the capital and is one of only three churches dedicated to Anglican worship in the capital. It was built in 1836 by James Skinner, an Indo-British colonel, whose mother was Rajput and father Scottish. It was the result of a promise made to God after Skinner was severely wounded in the first Anglo-Marathi battle of Uniara in 1800. He acquired the land and financed the construction of the church at his own expense. He commissioned architect Henry Medd to erect the yellow and white building. The architect adopted the plan of a Greek cross and designed an eight-sided dome that resembled that of the cathedral of Florence erected by Brunelleschi. The bad tongues nicknamed it "the cake". The stained glass windows were added in the 19th century and restored about 20 years ago. As for the great Mughal emperors, James Skinner is buried in his church. In front of the altar, you will find a marble plaque indicating the location of the burial site where the military man has been buried since 1842. From the moment it was erected in the heart of the English Quarter, the church became the quasi-official temple of the Anglican community. Governors General and Viceroys attended services in this small church until the construction of the Redemption Cathedral in New Delhi in 1931. The church was badly damaged during the Cipayan Revolt in 1857 and the bell tower that stands to the left of the entrance portico is an unfortunate addition from the late 19th century.
