Tangier got a cricket stadium in the 1990s, financed by Dubai tycoon Abdul Rahman Bukhatir. At the time the wealthy and powerful businessman had the ambition to spread cricket in the Arab world. The International Cricket Federation (ICC) granted the stadium international status, allowing it to host major competitions. In 2002, Morocco hosted Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka in a 50-over tournament.
