A foul, pestilential stench pervades the neighborhood. Stagnant water floods the atmosphere in which the tanners bathe. Around the holes where the hides are soaked, only the men are busy. Iguana, buffalo and sheep ornaments are immersed for hours, macerating in bird droppings, before being reworked and resold. Under the busy flight of swarms of flies, the iguana, buffalo or sheep skins undergo various processing stations before drying under the eye of the local chief, the "yougouda".
