Maroua is a cosmopolitan town with a majority of Foulbé, Bororo and Arabes Arabs. The Foulbé have the reputation of being excellent dealers and art makers (they specialize in the tannery), while Choa Arabs are large horse breeders. In Maroua, there are many Muslims, but also Christians and animists. Maroua is a pretty pleasant city. Its dusty streets are lined with countless fruit and meat vendors. The beige or ochre walls of the houses sometimes offer corners of life-saving shadows. In this part of Cameroon, local habitat is less «precarious» than in the south or in tropical regions. Poverty is less apparent, even if poverty remains very present. The arrival of a potentially rich White continues at least to create the event. Especially in the beautiful market of Maroua. This varied, colourful market remains one of the main points of interest in this city. The best day to visit it is on Monday, but the animation is permanent. We meet all kinds of artists, grouped by corporation or specialty: dyers, fabric dealers, quincailliers and countless vendors of transistors. Healers of all kinds explain the benefits of their traditional medicine and the different powers of their grey grey. The furs district, located on the other side of the Kaliao River, which is coupe in two and completely dried up a large part of the year, is also worth a visit. If you go to the shopping mall, you just have to go straight. Coming from the stadium, turn right. And at the last intersection in front of the Woila agency, young people work animal skins that will be used to manufacture bags, shoes, belts, etc.Not far from the slaughterhouse, the village of blacksmiths. Located at the foot of the mountain Kossel Bei, there are size of knives, spears, seals, and even rifles. Maroua, by the quality of its facilities and its charm, is a very good base for organising a journey in the northern part of Cameroon. Come back in the evening, exhausted, after a long day, and enjoy a tea or a beer on the terrace, is a real pleasure.
