Archaeological site north of the village of Dmanissi, with ruins of the medieval town and a magnificent viewpoint.
In Georgian, Nakalakari means "ancient city". It is an archaeological site north of the village of Dmanissi Patara (Old Dmanissi). The ruins of the medieval town of Dmanissi, spread over 25 ha, offer a magnificent view. The beautiful 7th century basilica of Sion, Dmanissis Sioni, rises at the foot of the ruins of the city. An important feudal centre from the early Middle Ages, the town became very prosperous from the 12th century, thanks to its location on the border. The bones of the Dmanissi man (1.7 million years old) were found there.
