The fortress of Gori entered history in the 13th century. However, archaeological excavations have uncovered the remains of fortifications as early as 65 BC, contemporaneous with Pompey's expedition. Its present structure dates from the 17th-18th centuries. It is a strategic point controlling the main economic routes, and Gori has always been a militarized city. In the Middle Ages, the Georgian kings had made it one of the most impregnable strongholds in the country.
