Founded in 1912, Svobodny, 53 678 inhabitants, km 7 807 of the Trans-Siberian Railway, is an important centre of advanced industry. Components for the Siberian Power gas pipeline, a Sino-Russian partnership (more than 2,000 km in Russia and the equivalent in China), commissioned in December 2019 in the region, were manufactured here. As a result of these gas activities, the city will soon be home to a gigantic chemical processing centre. Above all, the new Russian Baikonur hides in its vicinity. The cosmodrome, which has been operational since the late 1960s, sporadically served as a satellite launch centre. It now has a Soyuz launch pad and will soon have facilities for the Angara rocket.
