Behind the high gates, the curves of the paths delimit the flowerbeds, surrounded by century-old trees. The Garden of the Rhine Palace was designed in 1890. It houses some twenty sarcophagi and elements of ancient monuments from Strasbourg's Roman necropolis. On the north side is a sculpture by Alsatian René Hetzel, and on the south side, Annie Greiner's white granite celestial ladder pays homage to philosopher Jan Patoch. A medallion on the fence at the corner of Quai Sturm indicates the altitude of the site.
