Taïchet (about 35,000 inhab.) appeared on the map a little over a century ago, in 1897, at the time of the construction of the Transsiberian Railway. Located at km 4,515 of the line, it is a simple commercial and administrative stopover town on the Irkutsk road. In the 1920s, it became an important centre of metallurgy and forestry. The town's fame is mainly due to its position at the crossroads of several Siberian railways, especially between the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Baikal-Amur line, from which it is the starting point (BAM, which takes you 4,234 km north of the coast of the Khabarovsk Krai in the Far East). Beyond the passage of this hub, Taïchet has no tourist interest.
