Dudinka, with a population of about 23,000, is the largest port in Siberia (at the mouth of the Yenisei, 1,528 km north of Krasnoyarsk). It is mainly used for the export of nickel and palladium mined in the Taimyr Peninsula. Set in an extraordinary meander subject to (almost) eternal frost, illuminated 8 months a year by the Northern Lights, the city, plunged in cold and darkness, is nevertheless famous for its warm temperament. Its colourful buildings, from explosive red to spring green, as well as its flower boxes covered with shrubs and polar flowers are not lacking in charm. Its tundra environment, its festivities, its port activity, make it a very exotic curiosity.
