(МАГНИТОГОРСК). More than 200 km southwest of Chelyabinsk. Magnitogorsk is a gigantic factory town with a population of about 420,000, 52,000 of whom are employed in the MMK steel complex alone. It was built in 1929 by Gulag prisoners and became operational in 1931. Many heavy industries and workers were evacuated there during the Second World War, hence its size (25% of Russian steel in 1990). Today, its magnetic mountain, exhausted, no longer produces iron. The city, where the factories are running at full capacity, has no tourist interest. It does, however, provide access to the Abzakovo ski resort, located about 60 km to the northwest (in Bashkiria.
