Chelyabinsk, located 1,500 km from Moscow and 200 km south of Ekaterinburg, is another megalopolis in the Urals with more than 1 million inhabitants (1,200,719 to be precise). More recent than Ekaterinburg, more advanced in the Asian world, it grew only after the start of the Trans-Siberian Railway project (1892), to which it is not connected. Today it is a huge industrial centre (more than 130 good-sized factories), dominated by metallurgy, mechanics and nuclear power, famous for its poor, polluted air and lack of urban facilities. Cradle of the military industry of the USSR, it is nicknamed since Tankograd, the city of tanks. Its tourist interest is thus rather limited...
