140 km from Ekaterinburg, the city, with a population of 352,135, is of interest only to those who enjoy industrial tourism. It is one of the four giant Urals iron and steel complexes established around 1930. In the 19th century, the Demidovs had installed a locomotive production line there. Today, its ageing complex, employing 40,000 people, is home to the world's largest producer of tanks, Vagonzavod (wagon factory). Its activities have polluted it so much that in Ekaterinburg they say that one should "like to chew the air one breathes there"! Note that the city museum highlights the history of the region.
