SOUK OF MUTRAH
The souk's main entrance is on the corniche, to the left of the Great Blue Mosque as you head towards Old Muscat. With your eyes closed, you're sure to arrive at your destination, following the heady scent of incense! The market's main thoroughfare, entirely covered like the rest of the spaces, quickly divides in two. On either side, alleyways abound with goods of all kinds. The alleyways to the right lead to the jewelry sector, with its display cases of necklaces, bracelets and pendants in silver and solid gold. Immediately after the entrance, still on the right, is the perfume and pashmina corner. Leaving the central axis to the left is the area of poetic bric-a-brac. At the far end are the garment stalls. The atmosphere is not intrusive, as the salespeople merely encourage you to enter without ever pursuing you. Natives and tourists rub shoulders in good humor. From a pair of sneakers to antique trunks, spices, jewelry, kandjars, pottery and various handicrafts, the possibilities are endless. The stroll can be pleasantly prolonged, not to mention the time spent haggling for a "good price", a vague and rather arbitrary concept. Even if you have nothing to buy, the place is worth a visit for its very oriental atmosphere, its painted ceilings, its sometimes decorated beams, its scenes of life.
