BAIT ADAM MUSEUM
Abdullatif Al Bulushi, with three words of French and an Omani cap screwed on his head, offers us a broad welcoming smile. He wanted this museum and has been financing it from his own savings since 1999, no doubt so as not to spend his old age watching TV. Can a self-taught man play curator? As he opens the doors to his collections, our host provides immediate proof of this, taking us on an absolutely breathtaking tour, from Umayyad and Zanzibarite coins stamped with cloves, to original letters from a former sultan to the President of the United States, or a chart by Rigobert Bonne, Louis XVI's cartographer at the French Navy's hydrographic service. And this chess set, a Chinese marvel in ivory donated to the White House in 1833. Then there's the official agreement allowing Sur dhows to sail under the French flag, and the astonishingly beautiful photographic portrait of a Madonna with a piercing gaze behind her mask. Assembled over more than twenty years, these personal treasures now populate vast rooms on the first floor of Latif's personal residence, named Adam after his son. Our suggestion: visit Bait Al Baranda, the museum of Omani history in Mutrah, and then treat yourself to Bait Adam for the exchange, the encounter and the unique pieces. Don't hesitate to make a detour to the store: it offers typical Omani objects to bring back as souvenirs, at rather attractive prices.
