A capital of Ghor province since 1961, Chakcharan is a new city built in 1959 in a arbres plain, on the south shore of the Hari River. The city is known for its livestock market. It is a quiet small town with 70 000 inhabitants. From Hérât, the road winds along the mountains and, gradually, climbs up to a high plateau and desert. The city suddenly appears after a series of tiny villages. Although the population of the city is fairly mixed, we are in aïmak territory, a semi-nomadic ethnic Albanian ethnic. The Aïmaks live under yurts.A not confused with the Kouchis, who also live in the region, but stay under black tents. It is common to see passer caravans, with their camels, travelling from and to Chakcharan, to sell their crafts. For those who really want to venture around this region, Chakcharan can be a base, a drop-down point to pause, spend a night or get supplies. On the road of the Jam minaret or the Bamiyan minaret, for example. There is no tourism here and very few expatriates.
