This is Kuruman, the "Fountain of Christianity in Southern Africa", a hot land where some 20 million litres of water gush out every day in the "Eye of Kuruman", the most important natural spring in the southern hemisphere. Missionaries have been in the Kalahari since 1801. In 1821, the now famous Robert Moffat took possession of the place on behalf of the London Missionary Society. The restored mission, now controlled by the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa, is now open to visitors. The land in the area is rich in iron, asbestos and manganese, which have been mined for almost a century.
