ZAMORA CATHEDRAL
Cathedral with a Byzantine-influenced scaled dome, with an altarpiece by Fernando Gallego and choir stalls by Jean de Bruxelles
Known as the "Pearl of the Duero", the church's original Byzantine-influenced scaled dome, supported by a lantern tower with 16 double arches, has become the city's icon. Of its original gates, only the southern one, the Bishop's Gate, remains. In the 13th century, a massive tower was added for defensive purposes, while the cloister was completely rebuilt in the 17th century. The interior of this jewel houses an altarpiece by Fernando Gallego and choir stalls by Jean de Bruxelles (16th century).
