PIEDAD HOSPITAL

Monuments to visit

Founded at the request of the fifth Earl of Pimentel, he first had the function of lodging and assisting pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostela since the city is one of the steps of the camino francino passing through Astorga. Its facade is representative of the first Spanish Renaissance, while retaining influences from Gothic. The piedad scene appears on a high-relief (or semi-hump) above the corniche, framed by the founders' arms. Inside, you will notice the square patio surrounded by two-story galleries. The ensemble also includes a chapel whose wrought iron grid is decorated with gothic motifs. Today, the building houses a residence in the old age.
