Leros was very marked by its military history with the arrival of the Italians in 1912 who transformed the port into a vast naval base. When the Italians surrendered in September 1943, the Germans tried to take possession of the island, which was strategic in the region. But the British army knew the importance of this base and decided to fight back. Tunnels and bunkers built in the rock are becoming major issues. Today, you can still visit the Merikia tunnel where testimonies of this historic battle are displayed.
