An ancient religious center in Mires, one of the oldest and most esteemed cities in Crete.

From the 2nd century onwards, the Holy Metropolis of Gortyn was an important religious centre, one of the oldest and most valuable in Crete. During the Arab conquest, in 824, it was demolished and the seat was transferred to Heraklion. It was not reorganized until 961, after the deliverance. The apostles Paul and Titus were directly attached to the metropolis, because during their fourth mission they were in Gortyne to organize the church. The first bishops were ordained by the apostle Titus.
