The Hanság region was once made up of marshes until the regularization of the waters in 1775, due to the construction of the Hanság canal. Today, cultivated land spans the ancient marshes. Fertő Lake with an area of 19 735 hectares extends beyond the border to Austria. The lake itself is not very deep, the east banks are bogged down and full of reeds, a paradise for birds. Of the three islands of Mexico-Puszta, 2 000 gulls each year. Spatulas ducks and grey herons take their flight in the approach of boats. Sometimes the big white pappus can even be seen. On a part of the shore, a holiday village was built, Fertörákos. During the summer season, the lake reaches 15 000 and 20 000 holidaymakers.
