Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí used to be an important river port for the transit of goods (mainly bananas) on the Sarapiquí River to San Juan and then to the Atlantic, before the advent of the railroad. Nowadays, there are only sports tourists or locals on the waters of the Sarapiquí. The small town has become quiet, asleep in the afternoon heat when the workers are working in the banana plantations. Tourists come to raft, canoe to the San Juan River or pass through on the way to the Caribbean, Arenal or the Central Valley, because Sarapiqui is located at the crossroads of the three.
