TURTLE SPAWNING
Tortuguero National Park offering an unmissable outing with a guide to witness the laying of turtles on the sand.
If you're in Tortuguero at the right time of year (July to September), you'll be able to take part in the area's must-see excursion: with a guide, you'll be able to watch the turtles laying their eggs on the beach. Access to the beach is now divided into 5 sectors, so that visitors can have a chance to see the turtles as they lay their eggs, without there being complete anarchy. From June 15 to October 30, access to the beach is forbidden. Only lookouts are allowed to patrol. They pick up tourists and their guides in small groups. They wait on the path along the beach. When the turtle is identified and starts work, the guide is alerted by radio and the tourists are allowed onto the beach. Their ballet is skilfully orchestrated. Watching takes place from 8pm to 10pm, or from 10pm to midnight. There isn't really an ideal time: when there are lots of turtles, you're sure to see some, otherwise you'll have to rely on your luck. In the low season, from October 31 to June 14, you can walk along the beach with a guide, but the chances of seeing turtles are pretty slim. If you haven't booked a package, ask your hotel to organize this for you. Patrolling with a guide is an exhilarating experience, as the waves become quite impressive at night, and the darkness of the forest can only hint at the wild life that is active there, including the mythical jaguar, present in the area. An unforgettable experience.
