The church was Catholic until the introduction of the Protestant Reformation in 1543.
The church was Catholic until the introduction of the Protestant Reformation in 1543. King Louis XIV encouraged Catholicism in the 17th century. Catholics and Protestants shared the building from 1688 until it was rebuilt in 1912 in a neo-Renaissance style. The paintings and stained glass windows bring bright, luminous colors to the building. The organ is neo-Baroque. The young writer Goethe frequented the church during his stay in Alsace. There, he met Frédérique, the daughter of the Protestant pastor with whom he fell in love.
