HUAISHENG MOSQUE
Mosque established in 627, during the Tang period, when China opened up to the outside world
Established in 627 during the Tang period, the Huaisheng Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in China. According to tradition, it was founded by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, uncle of the Prophet Muhammad, who came to preach Islam in Guangzhou. Its Chinese name means "in memory of the wise man", and its 36 m minaret, nicknamed Guangta ("polished tower"), once served as a lighthouse for Arab merchant ships. Active during the Tang and Song dynasties, it bears witness to the influence of Arab merchants in Canton. Its Arab-Chinese style offers a unique spiritual atmosphere.
