Located 106 km from Xiamen, Quanzhou was once the most important port of the Fujian. Marco Polo even called the city «Alexandria of the Orient». At the time, the port was known as Zaiton (in Arabic) and specialized in the trading of silk and other precious fabrics. Once, Quanzhou was an absolute stopover on the road of maritime silk. Today, the city is known for its production of porcelain figurines and old quarters. From the thirteenth century, the city faces a shortage of food, the population exile and Quanzhou empties gradually. Corruption and the decline of the city are driving away traders and the port is losing all its notoriety. Even though Quanzhou is developing today and soaking up on its margins, its center remains very pleasant and constellated of historic sites.
