XICHAN TEMPLE
One of the ten most famous places of worship in Fujian
One of the ten most famous places of worship in Fujian. Established under the Sui (581-618), the temple had branches in Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia. The complex comprises over 40 buildings. The central hall (Daxiong) is a massive wooden structure and the centerpiece of the temple. Numerous lychee trees, still standing today, were planted in the temple grounds during the Tang and Song periods. In past centuries, men of letters would sit in the cool of the temple in summer to compose.
