The fort of Diaoyu, located at the confluence of the Jialing, Fujian and Qujiang rivers, was built in 1243 to withstand the Mongolian invasion. History tells us that after 36 years of battles, the people and army of Diaoyu managed to kill Mongolian leader Yuan Xianzhong, which put a stop to the progression of Mongolian troops in China.The fort, famous throughout the country, is today a fine example of the military architecture of the Song Dynasty: 8 km ramparts, 8 doors, round roads, underground… It houses many cultural remains of the Tang period.
