Hills home to valuable monuments and views of Beijing's modern high-rises.

History

Early construction dates back to the days of the Jin with the construction of Xiangshan Temple in 1186. The ensemble was subsequently supplemented by flags, pagodas and other commemorative and religious structures. Many buildings were destroyed during the Opium Wars (1860) and the Boxers Revolt (1900). Subsequent renovations have never restored all buildings: There were 28 original monuments. The wooded hills surrounding the area were the hunting areas of the emperors. The most important monuments are: the Ceramic Pagoda (Liuli Ta); the temple of light (Zhaomiao), a Tibetan style architecture built in 1780, rebuilt at the beginning of the century; and many other buildings that are constantly being restored.

The place is particularly appreciated by the Pekinese in the autumn, when the maples, covering the slopes of the mountains, take extraordinary red tints.

Visit

The climb can be a long one, but you know that a lift will take you to the top for a small amount: If the ascent loses its charm, you will only have more strength to wander down. It takes about an hour to get to the top.

From above, if weather permits, you will have a magnificent view to the south, on the Jade Fountain Hill, the Summer Palace and Kunming Lake, you can even see the modern towers of Beijing.

On the way or down, you will have the pleasure to admire the temple of the perfumed hills, built in 1186, the city at Both Wells and the pavilion at Mi-Versant.

If the site is beautiful in the autumn (the trees are packed with dark gold leaves and red leaves) and in the spring (camaïeux of greens and roses on the shrubs), the Chinese know it too, and the drawback will be that you will grow in a dense and dense crowd in the middle of loud shouts and laughter that risk spoiling a little pleasure. However, it's a great place to walk and outpace.

I went in 2007. This place is magnificent, especially when the trees start to flower. The journey bus (from Peking) is rather long. Attention them bus quickly fill with the Chinese...

To get to the top of hills, there are two choices: chairlift (around €3) and on foot. We travelled by the chairlift with the alley and stayed on foot.

An advice for the fragile people: take the chairlift because the walk is long and tiring especially when it is sunny. The steps are not all the same size and it is quite exhausting with long.

In any case up there, the view is really worth a visit.
