IL VALLE DI LANAITHO
Archaeological area with remains of two groups of dwellings
The Val di Lanaitho is the gateway to the mythical Supramonte. It's an almost aesthetically perfect depression, criss-crossed by olive groves and bordered by high limestone cliffs. You reach it by car as far as the Campo Base Lanaitho parking lot (20-minute drive). The adventure then begins on foot or by bike along the old bandit and charcoal-burning paths, as well as vertically along climbing walls, canyons and vias ferratas. The wealth of this valley is unique: several caves, a Nuragic village and historic monuments.
Free or guided tickets for Tiscali, Sa Seddà 'e sos Carros and Grotta Corbeddu can be purchased at Campo Base Lanaitho.
AREA ARCHEOLOGICA DI TISCALI
This prehistoric village, hidden inside a chasm, takes 2 hours to reach on foot. The hike alone is worth the detour to discover sumptuous landscapes. There is immense beauty in the aridity of the Supramonte. The doline, whose vault has collapsed, is made of limestone dating back 160 to 180 million years. The presence of man dates back more than 14,000 years. Excavations have also uncovered vestiges of the Nuragic civilization. Following conflicts with neighbouring populations, but especially after the arrival of the Romans in Sardinia, the inhabitants of the Lanaitto valley would have deserted their villages and sought refuge in this remote location. Even so, the chances of the village having been permanently inhabited are slim. There are no water sources in the vicinity, and arable land is almost non-existent. The village consists of the remains of two groups of dwellings (20 and 40 structures). The walls were built of large stones welded together with mud, and the roof was made of plant material. We recommend that you visit this site with a guide, who will also take you on a wonderful hike through this karst paradise.
SA SEDDA 'E SOS CARROS
This ancient Nuragic village is famous for its sacred spring dedicated to the cult of water, considered unique. The central fountain is decorated with engravings of rams' heads. The quality of construction is impressive for 1300-1200 BC, even if only the foundations remain - and the famous basin, surprisingly well preserved, giving a fascinating insight into the daily life of the Nuragic people. What's more, the presence of the sacred spring adds spiritual and religious significance to the site, offering a unique opportunity to understand the religious practices and beliefs of this ancient civilization. Sa Seddà 'e sos Carros means "the crossing point for carts" in Sardinian, perhaps indicating the site's fervent commercial activity.
GROTTA CORBEDDU
This cave is of great paleontological interest, as the remains of no less than three prehistoric animals have been discovered here, all of which have now disappeared, providing valuable evidence of Sardinia's prehistoric fauna. It is also remarkable for having yielded the oldest human remains in the Mediterranean islands. The cave is also of historical interest, having served as a refuge for the notorious Corbeddu Bandit at the end of the 19th century. Last but not least, the guided tour of the 3 rooms, which combines history and anecdotes, is fascinating from start to finish!
