These four cemeteries (Japanese, Chinese, Muslim and Aboriginal) bear witness to Broome's diversity during the pearling era.
There are actually four cemeteries next to each other, reflecting the diversity of Broome in the pearling era. The Japanese Cemetery, the largest Japanese cemetery in the country, dates back to 1896 and houses the graves of nearly 1,000 Japanese pearl divers. This gives a better understanding of the dangers of this industry which has caused many victims among divers. Next to it, the Chinese cemetery, then the Muslim cemetery where the Malays are buried and an aboriginal cemetery.
