Port Hedland is reached via the Great Northern Highway, 230 km north of Karratha. This town of 15,000 inhabitants lives off its iron deposits. The port sometimes seems tiny in front of the huge tankers parked there. You can also see mountains of white salt, also produced in the region, from the main road. There's not much to see in town, except for mining and port industry enthusiasts! Go for a picnic or a swim at the beautiful Pretty Pool. You'll find plenty of accommodation options here, as well as some good eateries, such as the Pilbara Room Restaurant.
