Carnarvon is a small town on the North West Coastal Highway, 200 km north of the turnoff to Shark Bay, at the mouth of the Gascoyne River. Here, on the Tropic of Capricorn, the warm climate and river water enable the production of tropical fruits, especially bananas. Even when the river is dry, groundwater is pumped for irrigation. The main street is 40 m wide, a reminder of the days when camel teams needed all this space to turn. A beautiful seaside promenade.
