Longreach, founded in 1870, is the largest town in west central Queensland. It was here in 1959 that the first Flying Surgeon Service was established to provide specialist care to small, isolated hospitals. It is also where Qantas established its first base in 1922 in the Qantas Hangar, still in use today. Until 1985, the only two motels in Longreach were rarely occupied and the population was dropping alarmingly before tourism picked up in recent years. The country is so flat in this region that when the rivers overflow, they submerge hundreds of miles of flat land.
