These rock formations at the southern end of Katoomba Street are one of the major attractions of the Blue Mountains.

The Three Sisters are the major attraction of the Blue Mountains. The legend of the guardians of these lands, handed down by the Gundungurra and Darug peoples, tells the story of three sisters - Meenhi, Wimlah and Gunnedoo - who fell in love with three brothers from a rival tribe. Their forbidden love led them to flee together. But this union triggered a terrible conflict between the clans. During the battle, a sorcerer intervened and, to protect the young women, turned them into stone.

Since then, they have dominated a breathtaking panorama of the immensity of the Blue Mountains.

Near the impressive viewpoint of Echo Point, at the southern end of Katoomba Street, these rock formations, composed of sandstone strata superimposed over millennia, have shaped a spectacular landscape: sheer cliffs, fern-covered gorges, steep ravines - one of Australia's most remarkable landforms. At night, under the floodlights, the scene becomes magical and unforgettable.

It's best to avoid visiting in the middle of the day and at weekends, when the tourist buses are busy. Echo Point can be reached on foot via the Three Sisters Walk (20 minutes one way, accessible to children and the disabled), which offers remarkable views. For the more athletically inclined, it's possible to descend the Giant Stairway Walking Track, a series of stairs leading down to Scenic World (4.7 km long, approx. 3 hours one-way) along the foot of the cliffs.
